Which volumetric weight divisor does your courier actually use
There's no single divisor across Indian courier services. For domestic shipments, BlueDart, Xpressbees and DTDC commonly use 5000 (length x width x height in cm, divided by 5000, gives volumetric weight in kg) -- but Delhivery and Ekart apply 4000 for some shipment categories, which produces a heavier, more expensive result for the same box. On the international side, FedEx and DHL air shipments typically use 5000, while India Post's international parcel service uses 6000, the most forgiving of the three. A parcel that comes out under a domestic 4000 divisor can look completely different once quoted at an international 6000 divisor -- which is exactly why this calculator shows all three side by side rather than picking one for you. If your courier's invoice doesn't match any of them, ask for the exact divisor in writing before you ship again.
Worked example -- the same box, three different chargeable weights
Take a box measuring 40 x 30 x 25 cm holding a product that actually weighs 4 kg. Its volume is 40 x 30 x 25 = 30,000 cubic cm. Divide that by 5000 (the common domestic divisor) and you get a volumetric weight of 6 kg -- so even though the product weighs 4 kg, the courier bills for 6 kg, because chargeable weight is always the higher of the two. Switch to a 4000 divisor (Delhivery/Ekart style) and the same box comes out at 7.5 kg -- 25% more than the 5000 result, for an identical parcel. Switch again to a 6000 divisor (India Post international) and it drops to 5 kg, still above the actual 4 kg but the lowest of the three. None of this shows up until you calculate it -- the invoice just says '6 kg' or '7.5 kg' with no explanation, which is why sellers are often surprised by courier charges that don't match what their kitchen scale said.

Why does my courier charge for volumetric weight instead of actual weight?
Couriers price cargo space, not just mass -- a large, light box takes up as much room in a truck or plane as a small, heavy one. Whichever number is higher, actual or volumetric, is what you're billed for, so a bulky-but-light parcel can cost more than its scale weight suggests.
Which divisor should I use if I don't know my courier's exact figure?
Ask your courier directly and get it in writing -- this calculator shows 4000, 5000 and 6000 because all three are genuinely in use across Indian domestic and international services, and guessing wrong under- or over-estimates your real shipping cost.
How can I reduce the volumetric weight charge on a shipment?
Since volumetric weight comes from length x width x height, the only ways down are a smaller box, tighter packing, or removing unnecessary void space -- reducing any one dimension lowers the volume, and therefore the volumetric weight, proportionally.
Does volumetric weight apply to every parcel?
Most couriers apply it above a minimum size threshold rather than to every parcel, and the exact rule varies by carrier and service type -- if your parcel is small and dense, actual weight may already be the higher (and therefore billed) figure, making volumetric weight irrelevant for that shipment.
